Dr Zacharias Androulakakis graduated from the Medical School of the National Capodistrian University of Athens, Greece in 1980. He completed his compulsory conscription in the Greek Army as a Medical Officer, and the “service in a rural area” (in Gouves, Crete). He completed his residency training in Surgery at the Aretaeion Hospital, the Second Department of Surgery, University of Athens in 1991. His training there included both General and Vascular Surgery. He further specialized in Vascular & Endovascular Surgery in the United Kingdom (1992-1997), as a registrar at NHS hospitals, including the 2-year period at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary (Scotland) – a university hospital. He had also previously worked with Mr D Charlesworth, Consultant and Professor of Vascular Surgery, at the University Hospital of South Manchester (England).
In Greece, he worked as a General & Vascular Surgeon at the “Venizelion” General Hospital of Heraklion Crete for almost 10 years (1997-2007). Being the only Vascular Consultant, he organized a Vascular Unit within the activities of the Department of Surgery. This Unit developed an affiliation with the Department of Vascular Surgery of the University Hospital of Heraklion, where he also worked for one year (2004). At the “Venizelion”, he was responsible for the management of all vascular cases of the hospital, running a vascular outpatient clinic and performing all elective and emergency vascular procedures on site.
Dr Androulakakis has been working in the private sector since 2007. His outpatient practice (consultations and outpatient treatments) is based at his office both in Heraklion and in Athens. He is a consultant in Vascular Surgery at certified private hospitals in Greece, where he performs the whole spectrum of vascular and endovascular procedures. He has also maintained a professional postgraduate activity in the UK. In 2013, he worked for 3 months as a senior fellow in the vascular unit of St Thomas’ Hospital (Guy’s & St Thomas’ Foundation NHS Trust) in London; this is a major vascular and endovascular unit with international reputation especially in the management of complex aortic aneurysms & aortic dissections and diabetic peripheral vascular disease. He was also trained in the less invasive modern techniques for treatment of varicose veins as day cases.
Since May 2016, he has been working as a consultant in Vascular Surgery at busy NHS hospitals in the UK providing vascular and endovascular services to the local population (read more Recent articles and news).
Dr Androulakakis has performed over four thousand vascular operations and has trained a large number of doctors in various surgical and vascular techniques, both at the British and the Greek hospitals where he worked. He has participated as a trainer in postgraduate programmes, such as bedside teaching for the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) course in Glasgow (1996 and 1997), seminars and formal lecturing to medical students in the UK. He has also delivered lectures to residents and specialists of Vascular Surgery, General Surgery and Family Practice in Greece. He is the author of several original scientific articles in the field of vascular and endovascular surgery that have been published in prestigious scientific journals or presented in meetings in Greece and abroad. He has contributed the translation of 5 chapters from English into Greek in two vascular surgical textbooks.
He possesses the ECFMG Diploma, having passed both the ECFMG (1983) & the VQE (1983) emaminations, required for medical practice in the USA. He is certified to perform vascular duplex ultrasound scanning (ΚΕSΥ, Athens, 1997). He is an active member of the following societies: Hellenic Society of Vascular Surgery, Hellenic Society of Angiology, Hellenic Society of Surgical Infections, European Society for Vascular Surgery (ESVS) and British Association of Sclerotherapists. He is on the Specialist Register of the General Medical Council (GMC) of the United Kingdom.
The doctor is an enthusiastic supporter of regular physical exercise for good health, and in this spirit he has taken part in long-distance running races in recent years.
